Sewu Temple

Sewu temple is located just several hundred meters northeast of Prambanan temple. It is a large and vast Budhist temple including several other small temples like Lumbung, Asu, Bubrah and Lor Kulon temple.

Plaosan Temple

Plaosan temple is about one kilometer east of sewu temple. This Buddhist temple consists of two main temples standing side by side, each having terraced bases. The relief carved on the southern main temple depicts a man and the other temple a woman. Another peculiarity of this temple is its perwara temple, which takes the shape of a slender stupa.

Banyunibo Temple

Banyunibo Temple is one of Buddhist temples that is located in the southeast of King Boko's Palace or some 3 kilometers from Prambanan temple to the south. This temple consists of one main temple facing west and is surrounded by 6 Perwara temples in form of stupa. The stupas line up in the south and east of the main temple.

Built in the 9th century, the temple is surrounded by various kinds of ornaments and relieves. In the front is penempil (the door). Just because the temple's body is smaller than the temple's shoe, not all part of the top floor or the temple's shoe is covered by the temple's body. This uncovered part is called selosor (alley).

The Banyunibo Temple is open daily at 08.00 a.m., to 5.00 p.m.

Kalasan Temple

This unique Buddhist temple is located some 16 km east of Yogyakarta on the south side of the main road between Yogyakarta and Prambanan. The temple was built in the honor of the marriage between King Pancapana of the Sanjaya Dynasty and a princess of the Cailendra Dynasty, Dyah Pramudya Wardhani. It is beautifully ornamented with finely carved relief and coated with "Vajralepa", a yellowish material made of the sap of certain three. The Vajralepa functioned as adhesive and as a protection against moss and mildew, and refined the carving as well. This temple is 24 meters high and its base built in the form of a Greek cross.

Sambisari Temple

The temple, which has been restored recently, is lo­cated some 12 kilometers east of Yogyakarta. Sambisari temple is very unique; it lies 6.5 meters underground. It was built in the 10th century. Because of the eruption of mount Merapi in 1906 the temple was buried by the volca­nic ashes. It was until 1976 that the temple was acciden­tally unearthed by a farmer who was working in his rice field.

Sari Temple

This Buddhist temple is located about 12 kilometers hom Yogyakarta or 600 meters northwest of Kalasan temple on the north, side of the main road from Yogyakarta to Solo.

This temple, apparently designed as Buddhist sanc­tuary or Vihara, was built in 8th century. The name "Sari' has something to do with the beauty of the ornament and the style of the temple.

The temple consists of 3 parts: foot, body, and roof.

The top of the roof is decorated with 6 stupas. Under each of the stupas there are 2 floors. The upper floor was for­merly used as home for the Buddhist preacher, while the lower floor was used as meditation or teaching room.

The temple is open everyday at 08.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Barong  Temple

The temple, found in Candi Sari sub-village, Bokoharjo, is also popular with some other names, but the local people call it Barong temple, based on the decoration kala in the niche of the temple's body, which looks like Barong (giant's face).

Barong Temple rests in a lime hill which stretches along the northwest part of Ratu Boko hill to the south­west part of Gunung Sewu. The temple which stands about 27 M above the sea level is about 4 kilometers from Prambanan Temple.

The rectangular Barong Temple is a Hindu rleritage. It has three yards with a terrace in the front anel undak (stair­way) in the back.

Gebang Temple

The temple is located in Gebang Sub-village, Wedomartani, Ngemplak Sub- district. You can get there by passing through the ringroad on the east side of Condong Catur Housing Complex about 1 kilometer to the north.

Gebang temple is built sometime between 7-8 BC and is situated in a cool and wonderful site near Kangkung River.
